Burger King Is Paying for a “Burger-King” Wedding (Seriously.)

There’s a royal wedding in the works, but it’s definitely not the one you might be expecting (cough, Prince Harry, cough). No, this one is focused squarely on the king — Burger King, that is. In a delightfully perfect turn of events, an Indiana couple named Joel Burger and Ashley King are getting married, and the fast-food chain with which they share their combined last names is footing the bill for their wedding!

Last week, Burger and King shared their engagement photos, which were ever-so appropriately taken with the sign outside their local Burger King. If they followed tradition, their engagement announcement would have proclaimed the “King-Burger” wedding, but they couldn’t resist flip-flopping their surnames to fully capitalize on the moment. The State Journal-Register picked up the story, and it quickly went viral, catching the attention of some intrigued Burger King higher-ups.

Yesterday, the couple received the best wedding present ever: During a Skype video call (above), Burger King told them that they’re picking up the tab! “Burger King wants to help give you a whopper of a wedding,” a representative told the couple on a handwritten sign. “In other words, it’s on us.”

Ashley put her hands over her mouth in shock, and her fiancé was equally as thrilled. “We were just blown away,” Joel told the State Journal-Register after the big reveal.

As it turns out, Burger King is pretty happy, as well. “When we heard about the happy Burger-King couple, we felt an overwhelming urge to celebrate their upcoming marriage,” Eric Hirschhorn, a spokesman for the fast-food chain, told the New York Daily News.

“On so many levels, it felt like fate,” he added. “They found each other and their story found us. We knew deep in our hearts that we wanted to honor the union of Mr. Burger and Ms. King in an unforgettable way.”

The lucky couple has known each other since kindergarten, but didn’t start dating until college. They’ll unite their lives (and last names, which, yes, friends have made fun of for years) on July 17.
