Every bride wants everything perfect on her wedding dayhair included. Curls have gotten a bad reputation as being unmanageable and unpredictable, but that simply is not true. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t embrace your natural curls on your big day, as it’s a time to be uapologetically “you” since that’s the person who your spouse fell in love with. We tapped the expert advice of hairstylist Cynthia Alvarez for ways to make your coils and waves flawless from your ceremony through to reception’s end.

The right products make all the difference.

Curls have a mind of their own and are thought to be less predictable than straight hair, which admittedly makes many brides hesitant. Alvarez says this isn’t accurate and should not stop women from opting for their natural hair texture on their wedding day. “Wearing your naturally curly hair on your wedding day can be overwhelming for some women but using the right products to help with the manageability of your curls is essential,” says Alvarez.

Moisturizing and nourishing your curls as much as possible in the days leading up to the ceremony is essential.

Of your routine the night before, Alvarez says nourishing shampoos and conditioners will help create smooth and manageable curls, while a mask will deliver intense nourishment for a smooth and shiny finish. She continues, “I’d also suggest using a leave-in treatment such as Dove Quench Absolute Crème Serum which adds an extra layer of moisture to help fight frizz. It can also be used the day of your wedding to refresh curls and help redefine them.”

Your wedding day isn’t the time for experimenting with color.

“If you want to try something new, I recommend doing it a month in advance,” says Alvarez. “This way you know how it wears and can determine if you like the way it translates in photos and in natural lighting. Color can look differently depending on the lighting so you’d want to figure this out long before your big day!”

Length allows for versatility, but you should not be worried about shrinkage.

To prevent shrinkage, Alvarez suggests setting your hair after your hair treatment. “You can create a twist out or set your hair on flexi rods or rollers. Then, let it naturally air dry throughout the night. You’ll want to practice and perfect which set you will be doing because once its set, it will be very difficult to change. Do a run through of your style before your wedding day.”

Wash your hair the night before the big day.

“You can treat and moisturize your hair the night before, letting it set and dry overnight so that by the day-of you know exactly what the outcome will be,” Alvarez explains. “If you decide to wear your own curls without a set, I recommend gathering all of your hair up into a high, loose ponytail often referred to as a ‘pineapple ponytail.’ Or if you’re going to set it, wear a silk scarf to prevent friction while you sleep. In the morning, use a serum to refresh your curls and help redefine them.”
